Jumping The Shark
“Well, Spokes, The Inauguration is tomorrow.”
“Yep, quite a run. But Obama’s not the first minority to be President, Hoop.”
“Oh, really, who was?”
“Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was post-polio and served 3+ terms from the seat of wheelchair.”
“Yeah, but voters didn’t really know he was disabled, Spokes.”

“Spokes, people equate disability with weakness.”
“True, but FDR is a gigantic rebuttal to that stereotype.”
“But there are real kinds of weakness that can be far more costly to our country.”
“For sure, Hoop. Like Bush, for example, who jumped the shark on day one for me.”
“Jumped the shark?”

“Dubya and his crew have been out on their it-ain’t-my-fault farewell tour, Spokes.”
“They sure have. They just couldn’t let us be. Dubya and the Dubettes have been telling those 27% who still actually listen to their BS what a great job he has done. Clinton did it! Whatever. My God, outside of Nixon after Watergate, Bush is number 1 is disapproval.”
“That’s true, Spokes, but history may be kinder. Look at Carter and Truman, and even Nixon. Their approval ratings are higher.”
“You taking drugs, Hooper? The approval is better because most of those who disapproved are no longer alive to voice their disapproval. Dubya sold his intellectual soul to the neo-cons and mucked up just about everything he touched. Bush did less reading than Sarah Palin for Pete sake.”
“So, you’re saying he sold out to the Far Right?”

“But it didn’t work.”
“Do you think, Hooper? The past eight years have been a disaster, and with the election of Barack Obama I was willing to clam up and say YES to the future. But Dubya had to go on tour – pathetic in light of everything.”
“Well, Spokes, Bush did admit it was a mistake putting that Mission Accomplished sign up after we ‘shocked and awed’ – sorry, I mean bombed the living crap out of – and steam-rolled Iraq.”
“Hooper, Dubya’s biggest mistake was taking the oath of office in 2001. He jumped the shark on that day, and our country may never be the same again.
“May God bless and help Barack Obama.”
